Petal Pips

Floralis juvena
Forest Familiar / Bloom Sprite

Petal Pips sprout only in rare places where powerful natural magic has lingered within the soil for many years. Forest mages believe these hidden pockets are often formed where the Mosskeeper has tended the land, weaving quiet enchantments through moss and root to shelter fragile growing things. Others claim the Root Weaver’s work deep beneath the forest floor — breaking down what has fallen and returning it to the earth — leaves behind a rich magical essence from which new life may emerge.

Where both forces meet, something unusual may take root.

Small and delicate the tiny sprout upon a Petal Pip’s head does not bloom immediately. Its flower only begins to open once the creature has formed a bond with its surroundings. The healthier and more peaceful the place, the brighter and fuller the bloom becomes. Some wanderers believe the flower reflects not only the land around it, but the kindness shown to the creature itself.

Gentle and endlessly curious, Petal Pips often watch travellers from moss-covered logs or tangled roots or peeking quietly from under leaves. Those hoping to earn the trust of a Petal Pip are advised to move slowly and leave small offerings of seeds near growing plants or soft patches of moss. A Petal Pip that accepts such a gift may quietly follow at a distance for a time, occasionally leaving tiny blossoms or fresh sprouts in places where the traveller rests.

When frightened, a Petal Pip burrows into the soil, leaving behind only a tiny sprout or flower as a disguise. Many travellers unknowingly walk past them, mistaking them for ordinary woodland plants.

When several Petal Pips gather together, strange things begin to happen in the surrounding forest. Flowers bloom out of season, vines creep across sleeping stone, and patches of earth thought barren suddenly burst with colour overnight. Some herbalists and Mages believe that following these trails of impossible blossoms and plants may lead toward hidden groves touched by ancient forest magic. .

Few who discover such places ever seem able to find them twice.
